The Mount Vernon School District Transportation Department, Centennial Elementary School, and Little Mountain Elementary School will conduct a One Mile Walk-to/from-School pilot program beginning Monday, May 20, 2013. Changes in State funding for pupil transportation services necessitates this change that will eliminate school bus stops that currently exist inside the one mile safe walking boundary. The district, school staffs, and Safe Routes to School Committee have worked hard to prepare for this pilot program. Upon completion of the program, information will be compiled to determine the steps necessary to implement the One Mile-to/from-School program district wide next fall. The program will begin on Monday, May 20 and continue through the end of the school year, Friday, June 14. Safe Walk Maps have been developed, extra crossing guards have been hired, and additional crossing guard training has occured, to ensure the safety of students who walk or bike to and from school. Walking school route monitors and District crossing guards will assist students to and from school during this time period. To find out if your child is in the one mile walk boundary, please contact your school office or the transportation department.
