Happy Friday,
The last couple of weeks, we have had a great opportunity to connect with families and work with students as they embarked on their 2023-2024 school year journey! I had the pleasure of visiting various Open House events. Additionally, District Office staff and I visited each of our schools on the first day of classes. It was truly amazing to see our whole staff come together to support our students. What stood out the most was our shared goal: helping students succeed! I want to send along a heartfelt thank you to each of you for your commitment and dedication to our students.
Jefferson Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
This week, Jefferson had a special Ribbon Cutting Event. It was a way to say thank you to all the volunteers, parents, staff, and students who helped improve Jefferson Elementary grounds. Thanks to a generous $25,000 gift from Lowes, Jefferson got a much-needed outdoor makeover! We're grateful to Lowes for their donation and to our parents, students, staff, and volunteers who worked hard to prepare for the first day of school. Binational Teachers Program
This summer, our district welcomed six teachers from Mexico through the Binational Program for the second consecutive year. Mount Vernon was the sole district in Washington state to participate in this program for the current year, and it has once again proven to be a success. I had the privilege of interviewing these educators at the end of their program, and I encourage you to watch. You can find that link here.

- Ramon Rivera remained busy through the summer. He visited Wenatchee to teach a mariachi workshop. Here is a brief article in the Wenatchee World. Thanks, Ramon, for sharing your skills, energy and positivity!
- Thank you bus drivers for getting out there early on Wednesday morning, transporting our students to and from school safely on the first day.
Four Pillars of Support and Success:
Many of of our staff heard me share about the Four Pillars of Support & Success during your building staff meeting. For those that have not, I am working with building administrators and/or supervisors to share this information in the near future. The board of directors and I have streamlined the work they have asked me to focus on this year, which is a continuation of last year. Our collective efforts under these four pillars continue to align the work towards our 100% graduation goal.
I have added a document which outlines the four pillars and provides more clarity and coherence. You can find that link here and there are additional links within the document if you would like to learn more. Additionally, we will be working towards updating our Strategic Plan for 2024-2025 school year, and beyond.
Hispanic Heritage Month
September is Hispanic Heritage Month. Many of our schools have celebrations planned during the school day, and after school events. As they come up, I will be sure to include them in the “Upcoming Events” below. Please let us know if you would like us to cover the event and/or send pictures and highlights our way.

- September 4th: Labor Day-No School
- September 5th: First day of school for kindergarten
Share a Shout Out!
This year we are introducing a new staff appreciation initiative we are calling “Share a Shout Out!” We know that MVSD provides a great place to learn, grow, and work. We would like to acknowledge individuals who contribute to excellence in the Mount Vernon School District! Our goal is to give staff, students, and families an opportunity to spotlight the great work taking place within our buildings and throughout the District. What does that look like? The names of those recognized will be shared with everyone on a weekly basis here and they will also receive a special certificate on your behalf. We are happy to share our first group of recipients with you today!

Feliz viernes,
¡En las últimas semanas, hemos tenido una gran oportunidad de conectarnos con familias y trabajar con los estudiantes mientras se embarcaban en su viaje del año escolar 2023-2024! Tuve el placer de visitar varios eventos de casas abiertas. Además, el personal de la Oficina del Distrito y yo visitamos cada una de nuestras escuelas el primer día de clases. Fue realmente sorprendente ver a todo nuestro personal unirse para apoyar a nuestros estudiantes. Lo que más se destacó fue nuestro objetivo compartido: ¡ayudar a los estudiantes a tener éxito! Quiero enviar un sincero agradecimiento a cada uno de ustedes por su compromiso y dedicación a nuestros estudiantes.
Ceremonia de corte de cinta de Jefferson
Esta semana, Jefferson tuvo un evento especial de inauguración. Fue una manera de agradecer a todos los voluntarios, padres, personal y estudiantes que ayudaron a mejorar los terrenos de la Primaria Jefferson. Gracias a una generosa donación de $25,000 de Lowes, ¡Jefferson obtuvo un cambio de imagen al aire libre muy necesario! Agradecemos a Lowes por su donación y a nuestros padres, estudiantes, personal y voluntarios que trabajaron arduamente para prepararse para el primer día de clases. Programa Binacional de Maestros
Este verano, nuestro distrito dio la bienvenida a seis maestros de México a través del Programa Binacional por segundo año consecutivo. Mount Vernon fue el único distrito del estado de Washington que participó en este programa durante el año en curso y una vez más ha demostrado ser un éxito. Tuve el privilegio de entrevistar a estos educadores al final de su programa y los animo a que lo vean. Puedes encontrar ese enlace aquí.

Cuatro pilares de apoyo y éxito
Muchos de nuestros maestros/as me han escuchado hablar sobre los Cuatro Pilares de Apoyo y Éxito durante las reuniónes de personal del edificio. Para aquellos que no lo han escuchado, estoy trabajando con los administradores y/o supervisores de los edificio para compartir esta información en un futuro próximo. La junta directiva y yo hemos simplificado el trabajo en el que me pidieron que me concentrara este año, que es una continuación del año pasado. Nuestros esfuerzos colectivos bajo estos cuatro pilares continúan alineando el trabajo hacia nuestra meta de graduación del 100%. He añadido un documento que describe los cuatro pilares y proporciona más claridad y coherencia. Puede encontrar ese enlace aquí y hay enlaces adicionales dentro del documento si desea obtener más información. Además, trabajaremos para actualizar nuestro Plan Estratégico para el año escolar 2024-2025 y en adelante.
Mes de la Herencia Hispana
Septiembre es el Mes de la Herencia Hispana. Muchas de nuestras escuelas tienen celebraciones planeadas durante el día escolar y eventos después de la escuela. A medida que surjan, me aseguraré de incluirlos en los "Próximos eventos" a continuación. Háganos saber si desea que cubramos el evento y/o le enviemos fotografías y aspectos destacados de nuestro camino.
