It’s the end of May! That means we only have a few more weeks remaining in the 2023-2024 school year. Your hard work every day for our students is appreciated, as well as the impact you have on every student.

Madison artwork dedication
Madison Elementary celebrated an exciting event this week, with the official dedication of their beautiful new artwork. Funded by the Washington State Arts Commission, the school installed stunning mosaic wall murals by artist Mauricio Robalino. Prior to this week's art dedication, students had the opportunity to learn about the artist's background and participate in an artistic journey during the school day. These two beautiful pieces are part of a larger collection within the district, made possible by the Washington State Arts Commission. Young graduates
Our youngest learners celebrated their graduation yesterday as MVHS's Little Friends Preschool proudly graduated nine preschoolers. A huge shout-out to our amazing student teachers in the Early Childhood Education class, along with their teacher Mandy McColl and paraeducator Becky Love, for organizing a wonderful celebration for our students and their families.
MVHS Scholarship Foundation
I recently shared information about the MVHS Scholarship Foundation and its efforts to provide scholarships to our high school students. Today, I had the pleasure of attending the Inaugural Fundraising Breakfast, where scholarships were presented to thirteen seniors. A huge shout-out to the MVHS Scholarship Foundation for their incredible work, and heartfelt thanks to our community for their contributions that made this event a success.
EPA Clean School Bus Grant
Kelly Johnson, Transportation Supervisor, was happy to announce the successful grant award from the EPA. One of only 67 school districts nationally, the grant represents $25,000 each for four buses to replace old diesel engines with clean burning propane buses. Although the grant is not quite the equivalent of a new bus, it will certainly update the fleet.
Giving back to the community
5th Grade students in Tony Dabbs' class at Washington Elementary raised $520.15 to donate to Helping Hands Food Bank. They also visited Helping Hands where they assisted in packing food boxes to distribute. The staff at Helping Hands commented how wonderful and helpful the students were. Thank you students and staff who made this possible!
Washington Elementary students
Recently, Sakura Drake, ILC teacher at Washington, was featured in an article for her work in installing a communication board on the Washington playground. This communication board makes playing on the playground more accessible for all students and is a way to improve communication with all students. You can read the article here. Thank you Sakura!
Exploring Pillar 1: Mission, Vision, and Core Values through Classroom Visits
Northwest Career & Technical Academy (NCTA) welcomed me this week to get updates on the great programs and services provided for our students. Their programs offer many opportunities to students from our district and numerous others across Skagit, Whatcom, and Island counties. In conjunction with their home district, these students earn more than their high school diplomas. They can find out about different careers, earn skills certificates, and learn what additional education might be needed to expand on their education. Thank you, Lynette Brower, Director, for the opportunity to visit the NCTA students throughout the year and see firsthand the numerous opportunities for our students to flourish and ‘thrive by the age of twenty-five”!!
We were also fortunate enough to have your incoming Superintendent, Dr. Victor Vergara join us in calibration classroom walk-throughs under the leadership of Assistant Superintendent of TLL, Dr. Kate O’Brien at the high school. Thank you to our teachers and administrators for the opportunity to learn together!
Bulldog Coffee Cafe
I had a chance to stop by the Bulldog Coffee Cafe. This amazing program is overseen by MVHS teacher Deven Grant and operated by her students, and is open every Green Friday morning. Students in the SLC and ILC programs are actively engaged in acquiring job skills as part of their preparation for the post-high school Transition program, and this is a great opportunity to help them acquire experience. Great job, Deven, and kudos to her dedicated students for their outstanding work.
Mount Baker Middle School students visit Whatcom Community College
Earlier this week, Holly Erickson and Monica Nosky took their AVID students on a college campus tour to Whatcom Community College. Students were engaged and interacted with a number of departments including engineering, computer science and business. They toured the different student resources available and heard about admissions and applications. They also learned about a 5-day cyber technology class offered (at no cost to them) for middle school and high school students this summer. A big thank you to everyone for helping make this field trip possible; it was a wonderful experience for all.
Rotary Students of the Month
This week we had a chance to celebrate with our two students who were selected as the Rotary Students of the Month for May. Congratulations to Skagit Academy student Elyssa Kofler and NCTA student Eric Santos for their hard work to earn this recognition. Thank you also to Rotary for recognizing their dedication to learning.

Kinder Connect
This week the district completed the majority of the Kinder Connect events. The only remaining event is on June 4, 5PM at Madison. Kinder Connect provides an opportunity for kindergarten age students and their parents to interact with their school. We want to thank every staff member who helped with these events. Even though the Kinder Connect events are mostly done, registration will continue. If you know a family who has a child turning 5 by August 31, 2024, please share this information with them. Registration packets can be completed online here.

Baseball State Finals 2nd Place in 3A State Baseball, GREAT Season Bulldogs!!
In an incredible display of talent, teamwork, and determination, the Mount Vernon High School Bulldogs baseball team clinched 2nd place in the 3A State Baseball Championship. Although the final game ended with a loss, our Bulldogs have every reason to hold their heads high and celebrate a season filled with remarkable achievements! Well done Bulldogs!!!
MVHS Mariachi and Folklorico open for George Lopez
You may recall that the MVHS Mariachi and Folklorico were the opening acts for comedian George Lopez on Friday of last week. By all accounts, they did tremendously well. A big thank you to our director, Ramon Rivera, and great job students!
OSPI features MVHS
OSPI Superintendent Chris Reykdal recently highlighted the MV Mariachi in the 2024 Superintendent’s 51st Annual Art Show. ¡Es el último día de mayo! Eso significa que solo nos quedan unas pocas semanas más en el año escolar 2023-2024. Se agradece su trabajo duro todos los días para nuestros estudiantes, así como el impacto que tiene en cada estudiante.

El 21 de junio de 2024, esta será una salida temprana de 2 horas para todos los estudiantes.

Dedicación de la obra de arte de Madison
La Primaria Madison celebró un evento emocionante esta semana, con la dedicación oficial de su nueva y hermosa obra de arte. Financiada por la Comisión de Artes del Estado de Washington, la escuela instaló impresionantes murales de mosaicos del artista Mauricio Robalino. Antes de la dedicación artística de esta semana, los estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad de conocer los antecedentes del artista y participar en un viaje artístico durante el día escolar. Estas dos hermosas piezas son parte de una colección más grande dentro del distrito, hecho posible gracias a la Comisión de Artes del Estado de Washington. Jóvenes graduados
Nuestros alumnos más jóvenes celebraron su graduación ayer cuando el preescolar Little Friends de MVHS graduó con orgullo a nueve niños en edad preescolar. Un gran agradecimiento a nuestros increíbles estudiantes de magisterio en la clase de Educación Infantil, junto con su maestra Mandy McColl y la paraeducadora Becky Love, por organizar una maravillosa celebración para nuestros estudiantes y sus familias.
Fundación de Becas MVHS
Recientemente compartí información sobre la Fundación de Becas MVHS y sus esfuerzos para brindar becas a nuestros estudiantes de preparatoria. Hoy tuve el placer de asistir al Desayuno Inaugural de Recaudación de Fondos, donde se entregaron becas a trece estudiantes del último año. Un gran reconocimiento a la Fundación de Becas MVHS por su increíble trabajo y un sincero agradecimiento a nuestra comunidad por sus contribuciones que hicieron de este evento un éxito.

Estudiantes de la primaria Washington
Recientemente, Sakura Drake, profesora de ILC en Washington, apareció en un artículo por su trabajo en la instalación de un tablero de comunicación en el patio de recreo de Washington. Este tablero de comunicación hace que jugar en el patio de recreo sea más accesible para todos los estudiantes y es una forma de mejorar la comunicación con todos los estudiantes. Explorando el Pilar 1: Misión, Visión y Valores Fundamentales a través de visitas a las clases.
Northwest Career & Technical Academy (NCTA) Me dieron la bienvenida esta semana para recibir actualizaciones sobre los excelentes programas y servicios brindados a nuestros estudiantes. Sus programas ofrecen muchas oportunidades a los estudiantes de nuestro distrito y a muchos otros en los condados de Skagit, Whatcom y Island. En conjunto con su distrito de origen, estos estudiantes obtienen más que sus diplomas de escuela secundaria. Pueden obtener información sobre diferentes carreras, obtener certificados de habilidades y aprender qué educación adicional podría ser necesaria para ampliar su educación. ¡¡Gracias, Lynette Brower, Directora, por la oportunidad de visitar a los estudiantes de NCTA durante todo el año y ver de primera mano las numerosas oportunidades para que nuestros estudiantes prosperen y "prosperen a la edad de veinticinco años"!!

Café Bulldog
Tuve la oportunidad de pasar por el Bulldog Coffee Cafe. Este increíble programa está supervisado por la maestra de MVHS, Deven Grant, y operado por sus estudiantes, y está abierto todos los Viernes Verdes por la mañana. Los estudiantes de los programas SLC e ILC participan activamente en la adquisición de habilidades laborales como parte de su preparación para el programa de transición posterior a la escuela preparatoria, y esta es una gran oportunidad para ayudarlos a adquirir experiencia. Gran trabajo, Deven, y felicitaciones a sus dedicados estudiantes por su excelente trabajo.
Los estudiantes de la escuela secundaria Mount Baker visitan Whatcom Community College
A principios de esta semana, Holly Erickson y Monica Nosky llevaron a sus estudiantes de AVID a un recorrido por el campus universitario de Whatcom Community College. Los estudiantes participaron e interactuaron con varios departamentos, incluidos ingeniería, informática y negocios. Recorrieron los diferentes recursos estudiantiles disponibles y escucharon sobre admisiones y solicitudes. También aprendieron sobre una clase de tecnología cibernética de 5 días que se ofrece (sin costo para ellos) para estudiantes de secundaria y preparatoria este verano. Estudiantes del mes de Rotary
Esta semana tuvimos la oportunidad de celebrar con nuestros dos estudiantes que fueron seleccionados como los Estudiantes Rotarios del Mes de mayo. Felicitaciones a la estudiante de Skagit Academy Elyssa Kofler y al estudiante de NCTA Eric Santos por su arduo trabajo para obtener este reconocimiento. Gracias también a Rotary por reconocer su dedicación al aprendizaje.

Conecta A Kinder
Esta semana el distrito completó la mayoría de los eventos de Kinder Connect. El único evento restante es el 4 de junio a las 5 p.m. en Madison. Conecta a Kinder brinda una oportunidad para que los estudiantes en edad de kinder y sus padres interactúen con su escuela. Queremos agradecer a todos los miembros del personal que ayudaron con estos eventos. Aunque la mayoría de los eventos de Conecta a Kinder ya están terminados, la inscripción continuará. Si conoce una familia que tiene un hijo/a que cumplirá 5 años antes del 31 de agosto de 2024, comparta esta información con ellos. Los paquetes de inscripción se pueden completar en línea aquí.

Finales Estatales de Béisbol 2do Lugar en Béisbol Estatal 3A, ¡¡GRAN Temporada Bulldogs!!
En una increíble demostración de talento, trabajo en equipo y determinación, el equipo de béisbol Bulldogs de la preparatoria de Mount Vernon obtuvo el segundo lugar en el Campeonato Estatal de Béisbol 3A. Aunque el juego final terminó con una derrota, ¡nuestros Bulldogs tienen todos los motivos para mantener la cabeza en alto y celebrar una temporada llena de logros notables! ¡¡¡Bien hecho Bulldogs!!!
Mariachi y Folklorico de MVHS abren para George Lopez
