June 14, 2024
Happy Friday,
In our ongoing commitment to Equity and Social Justice for All, we proudly acknowledge and celebrate Pride Month! During the month of June, we also recognize Slavic History Month, National Caribbean-American Heritage Month, and the Great Outdoors Month.
Equity Affinity Group
The dedicated community of MVSD queer educators met six times this year as an Equity Affinity Group. Facilitated by Sage Wilkirk, they engaged in a book study of "A Queer History of the United States," hosted a movie night, and are looking forward to participating in local Pride festivals this month. Next year, they aim to connect with student groups of similar affinities to foster conversations and advocate within the broader student and teacher population. If you're interested in joining, please reach out to Sage Wilkirk at swilkirk@mvsd320.org.
Graduation Events
This week we highlighted the remarkable achievements of graduates at Aspire Academy, NCTA, and this morning, MVHS. Thank you staff who helped organize all of these amazing celebrations. Congratulations to all of our graduating seniors at Skagit Academy, Aspire Academy, NCTA, and MVHS ! Your accomplishments are a testament to your perseverance and dedication.
Graduation Parade
I hope you had a chance to enjoy this week's parade honoring the 2024 graduates. It's always a wonderful time to celebrate our students' hard work, dedication, and commitment to the community. I want to extend my gratitude to all the staff who helped make this event so special. Congratulations to the graduating class of 2024!
Ellison Foundation Grant
The Ellison Foundation is delighted to announce the recipients of this year’s Ellison Education Grants, awarding 17 grants totaling $99,500. Since 2017, the Foundation has awarded 143 grants totaling $608,000. This year, Cecilia Guzmán-Marrón from Madison Elementary received a grant to create an outdoor learning space for TTK kids. Currently lacking an age-appropriate outdoor area, the project aims to foster creativity and exploration through nature. The $6,500 grant will fund a gazebo, turf rug, rain suits, rain boots, raised garden beds, a mud kitchen, and outdoor sensory and STEM tools. The goal is to offer lessons and play opportunities outside, with the space expected to be ready by September.
Let’s Go bike program
Little Mountain and Washington Elementary are among the first schools in NW Washington to pilot the "Let's Go" Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Education Program. During PE classes, 5th-grade students have learned the fundamentals of bike safety. Excitingly, these schools have received an "Earn-a-Bike" grant, enabling all participating 5th graders to take home a fully assembled "hybrid" bike, helmet, lock, and light set. Additionally, students in the ILC program have received adaptive tricycles, ensuring everyone can benefit from the program. A huge shout out to teachers Mrs. Klinger and Mrs. Thramer for helping secure this grant, ensuring our students learned the valuable skills needed to safely ride their bikes, and coordinating the bike distribution. Congratulations 5th grade students at Little Mountain & Washington Elementary.
Little Mountain Beautification Day
This past Saturday families, staff and students helped beautify the Little Mountain Campus. They cleaned out the community garden, repainted the playground, trimmed hedges and cleared out weeds. It was an awesome day of hard work and community building! Thank you to everyone who helped participate, and great job Little Mountain Lions!
REMINDER - one last snow make up day!
June 21, 2024, this will be a 2-hour early release for all students
~This means that Thursday, June 20th (originally our last day of school) will now be a full day~
LaVenture Marimba
This past weekend, LaVenture Marimba students, under the direction of teacher Amy McFeeley, performed at the Farmers Market. Their spectacular 2-hour set featured 40 dedicated students playing 18 pieces. In addition to this performance, they have also showcased their talents at Illuminight Skagit and the Tulip Festival Street Fair. A huge thank you to Mrs. McFeeley and our amazing musicians! Enjoy this small snippet of their performance from last weekend.
MBMS holds Mock Trials
Last week, we shared about the Mount Baker Middle School Mock Trials, a two-day event where 8th-grade students showcase their skills in a simulated courtroom setting. Ms. Sandoz's class conducted two trials: State vs. DeLuca, a manslaughter trial, and State vs. Durden, a manslaughter and hazing trial. Ms. Gearhart's classes also simulated State vs. Durden, while Ms. Cleve's class brought the case of Goldilocks vs. The Three Bears to life. Over the past three months, students have diligently studied the justice system and the legal process, culminating in their impressive trial performances. We extend our gratitude to the Burlington Municipal Courthouse for hosting us, and we were honored to have Mayor Bill Asslet, several courthouse police officers, and even a second-grade class on a tour stop by to watch. A huge shout out to the city of Burlington for their support and to our amazing staff—Samantha Sandoz, Kelsey Gearhart, and Geri Cleve. Great job, students! Additionally, the Skagit Valley Herald covered the Mock Trial in the newspaper. The link to the article is here. Please check out the pictures from the two day event here.
College Signing Day
This week, MVHS students celebrated College Signing Day, an event organized by Gear Up Director Manny Espinoza. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all the staff who helped make this event a success, the colleges that attended, and a special thanks to SignPro of Skagit Valley for their exceptional support and quick turnaround in helping our MVHS students.

14 de junio de 2024
Feliz Viernes,
McFeeley y a nuestros increíbles músicos!
MBMS realiza juicios simulados
Cleve dio vida al caso Goldilocks vs. The Three Bears.
