This is your last week to participate in the Mount Vernon Public Schools Foundation (MVPSF) Haggen's Building Brighter Futures Together fundraiser at your Mount Vernon Haggen. This fundraiser, which has given so much to our students, goes through March 8th, 2022. Thank you for your support.
March 6-12 is National School Social Workers Week
We want to specifically recognize and thank our hard working, diligent team of School Social Workers in our District next week. Mount Vernon School District has been fortunate to hire four School Social Worker professionals this year to support our students, families and staff. School Social Workers provide support to students, specifically in areas of social-emotional learning and mental health needs, and are uniquely trained to integrate the school, community, and family context into interventions and resource referrals. ALL school social workers are educated to work toward equity and root their practices in social justice. This means school social workers are educated to break down opportunity gaps and address systemic inequities, honoring an individual’s dignity and worth. School Social Workers are the integral link between home, school, and community. They use evidence-based education, behavioral consultation, mental health support, and case management services sometimes comparable to "wrap around services" to maximize academic and social success. Our School Social Workers are itinerant staff, sharing their time within their assigned buildings where they are members of school-based teams in collaboration with the Principals, School Counselors, Nurses, School Psychologists, and other staff.

This month, I sat down with Bill Cheney, Director of Student Support and Prevention Services. Bill shared how the district is working with our counselors and social workers to address the mental health needs of our students. I hope you take a few minutes to watch our video HERE.
Bulldog Award
February’s Bulldog Award was presented to Kelley Kirkpatrick. Kelley was selected in recognition of her dedication and commitment to the debate team. With Kelley’s guidance, MVHS students are competing at State for Debate and Speech. Thank you Kelley, for your continued support of our students, and representing the Bulldog spirit!
Students Visit Grand Canyon University
Our Mariachi & Latinos in Action students will soon be on their way to Phoenix, Arizona to visit Grand Canyon University. Thank you to Mrs. Carillo and Mr. Rivera for their efforts organizing this event. Congratulations to these Bulldogs for being accepted to the University and being invited to visit the Campus! Go Bulldogs!
Board Meeting questions and/or public comments
Any questions we receive at the board meeting are shared and answered here. Below are the responses to this week's questions.
Q. Are the windows being put in going to be able to open for fresh air when the rooms are complete? How far?
A. The auditorium windows do not open. They are extremely large. The auditorium is also a climate controlled space, including cooling so that the space can be comfortably used in the summertime. In regards to the windows in rooms opening, we will have more information by next week’s blog.
Q. When will an update on the research on year round schooling be shared with stakeholders? Are there any updates on the timeline for research and implementation of any changes?
A. We plan to provide more information regarding a Student Focused Balanced Calendar sometime late spring. For the purpose of consistent communication, it is important to note that we are not researching year round schooling. Currently, there is a small group of District staff engaged in a book study around this topic. We will complete the book study at the end of March. Next, we will bring together a planning work group to identify next steps. One of the tasks from this planning group will be to develop a plan on how to engage the broader community (stakeholder). We hope to have some of these steps in place towards the end of spring.

Queremos reconocer y agradecer específicamente a nuestro equipo diligente y trabajado de Trabajadores Sociales Escolares en nuestro Distrito. El Distrito Escolar de Mount Vernon ha tenido la suerte de contratar a cuatro trabajadores sociales escolares profesionales este año para apoyar a nuestros estudiantes, familias y personal. Los Trabajadores Sociales Escolares brindan apoyo a los estudiantes, específicamente en áreas de aprendizaje socioemocional y necesidades de salud mental, y están especialmente capacitados para integrar el contexto escolar, comunitario y familiar en intervenciones y referencias de recursos. TODOS los trabajadores sociales escolares están educados para trabajar hacia la equidad y enraizar sus prácticas en la justicia social. Esto significa que los trabajadores sociales escolares están capacitados para romper las brechas de oportunidades y abordar las desigualdades sistémicas, respetando la dignidad y el valor de un individuo. Los trabajadores sociales escolares son el vínculo integral entre el hogar, la escuela y la comunidad. Usan servicios de educación basada en evidencia, consulta de comportamiento, apoyo de salud mental y administración de casos, a veces comparables a "servicios integrales" para maximizar el éxito académico y social. Premio Bulldog

P. ¿Se podrán abrir las ventanas para que entre aire fresco cuando las habitaciones estén completas? ¿Cuán lejos?
R. Las ventanas del auditorio no se abren. Son extremadamente grandes. El auditorio también es un espacio con clima controlado, que incluye enfriamiento para que el espacio se pueda usar cómodamente en verano. Con respecto a la apertura de ventanas en las habitaciones, tendremos más información en el blog de la próxima semana.
P. ¿Cuándo se compartirá con las partes interesadas una actualización de la investigación sobre la escolarización durante todo el año? ¿Hay alguna actualización en el cronograma para la investigación y la implementación de cualquier cambio?
R. Planeamos proporcionar más información sobre un Calendario Equilibrado Centrado en el Estudiante en algún momento a fines de la primavera. Para el propósito de una comunicación consistente, es importante tener en cuenta que no estamos investigando la escolarización durante todo el año. Actualmente, hay un pequeño grupo de personal del Distrito que participa en un estudio de libro sobre este tema. Completaremos el estudio del libro a finales de marzo. A continuación, reuniremos un grupo de trabajo de planificación para identificar los próximos pasos. Una de las tareas de este grupo de planificación será desarrollar un plan sobre cómo involucrar a la comunidad en general (parte interesada). Esperamos tener algunos de estos pasos en marcha hacia el final de la primavera.
