Next week is Spring Break! Students will return to school on Monday, April 11th.  
 
Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year
The Boys & Girls Club announced the selection of the Washington State Youth of the Year late last week. We are proud to say that Johanna Gamboa, senior at Mount Vernon High School, was this year’s recipient. Johanna received a scholarship for this award, plus a second scholarship for the Qualstar Credit Union Collaborative Spirit Award. Johanna will now move on to the Pacific Regional program, and the opportunity for more scholarships. Her speech is HERE and worth the watch. Our sincere congratulations to Johanna and good luck to her as she progresses through the Boys & Girls Club opportunities. 

Tea with Dr. V
This month’s Tea with Dr. V included interviews with David Connors, Food Service Supervisor and Tim Papendorf, Information Technology Supervisor. These two departments have a tremendous impact on our students’ ability to learn and to have productive days at school. These departments and their staff are so often “behind the scenes”, that we may forget the critical role their entire team plays in helping students succeed. Thank you to the technology and food service teams, and special thanks to David and Tim for sharing.

Rotary donates dictionaries
Mount Vernon Rotary delivered 417 McMillian student dictionaries to our third-grade students on Wednesday afternoon. There will be an additional 139 delivered after spring break. The Rotary has been supporting the dictionary program for many years, along with the 12th Grade Rotary Student of the Month recognition. Their goodwill provides students with a beautiful hardcover book for their home. The generosity of volunteers in this club and many other service organizations provides experiences and support to our community. Thank you service club members for all you do. Multicultural Events
This week, the MVHS hosted a variety of Cultural Events.  This included daily Heritage Days during student lunches, as well as a Multicultural Night.  Monday’s Multicultural Night gave students an opportunity to showcase the diverse cultures within our district.  This event drew in about 400 students and families!  The evening was a great success thanks to all the staff.  A big “Thank You” for showcasing student diversity in Mount Vernon!

National Library week takes place during our spring break.  I want to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful Library staff, including teachers and paraeducators for their dedication to creating a love of reading in our students.  The libraries are such a vital part of our education system!

AVID sophomore student, George Maldonado-Cruz, was just accepted into the Washington World Fellowship Program!  This Fellowship is a rigorous 2.5-year program that includes college preparation, study abroad, global leadership development, and civic engagement. It was created with the goal of offering a transformative experience to students that will expand their minds while opening doors to unique academic and leadership opportunities few students have the chance to experience.  Way to go George!!!  If you'd like to learn more about this program, please click on this link. 

Refugee & Immigrant Services Northwest will be providing legal assistance for new arrivals from Ukraine because of the humanitarian crisis, at Everett Community College, in Rainier Hall room 200, on April 3 from 1-5 p.m.  If you know any Ukrainians who might need assistance with immigration please share this information!

Boys & Girls Club Joven del Año
El grupo de Boys & Girls Club anunció la selección del Joven del Año del Estado de Washington a fines de la semana pasada. Nos enorgullece decir que Johanna Gamboa, estudiante de último año de Mount Vernon High School, fue la ganadora de este año. Johanna recibió una beca para este premio, además de una segunda beca para el premio Qualstar Credit Union Collaborative Spirit Award. Johanna ahora pasará al programa regional del Pacífico y tendrá la oportunidad de obtener más becas. Su discurso está aquí si tiene tiempo para verlo. Té con el Dr. V
El Té con el Dr. V de este mes incluyó entrevistas con David Connors, supervisor de servicio de alimentos y Tim Papendorf, supervisor de tecnología de la información. Estos dos departamentos tienen un tremendo impacto en la capacidad de nuestros estudiantes para aprender y tener días productivos en la escuela. Estos departamentos y su personal algunas veces están  "detrás de escena", que podemos olvidar la parte fundamental que juega todo su equipo para ayudar a los estudiantes a tener éxito. Gracias a los equipos de tecnología y servicio de alimentos, y un agradecimiento especial a David y Tim por compartir.
 
Rotary donado diccionarios
Mount Vernon Rotary entregó 417 diccionarios McMillian a estudiantes de tercer grado el miércoles. Habrá 139 adicionales entregados después de las vacaciones de primavera. El Rotary ha estado apoyando el programa de diccionario durante muchos años, junto con el reconocimiento del estudiante de 12.° grado. Su buena voluntad proporciona a los estudiantes un hermoso libro de tapa dura para su hogar. La generosidad de los voluntarios de este club y de muchas otras organizaciones de servicio brinda experiencias y apoyo a nuestra comunidad. Gracias a los miembros del club de servicio por todo lo que hacen. 
 
Eventos culturales
Esta semana, la escuela preparatoria organizó una variedad de eventos culturales. Esto incluyó Días de Herencia diarios durante los almuerzos de los estudiantes, así como una Noche Multicultural. La Noche Multicultural del lunes les dio a los estudiantes la oportunidad de mostrar las diversas culturas dentro de nuestro distrito. ¡Este evento atrajo a unos 400 estudiantes y familias! La velada fue un gran éxito gracias a todo el personal, i. ¡Un gran “Gracias” por mostrar la diversidad estudiantil en Mount Vernon!
 
La semana de la Biblioteca Nacional se lleva a cabo durante nuestras vacaciones de la primavera. Quiero aprovechar esta oportunidad para agradecer al maravilloso personal de la biblioteca, incluidos los maestros y paraeducadores, por su dedicación para crear el amor por la lectura en nuestros estudiantes. ¡Las bibliotecas son una parte tan vital de nuestro sistema educativo!
 
¡El estudiante de segundo año de AVID, George Maldonado-Cruz, acaba de ser aceptado en el Programa Mundial de Becas de Washington! Esta beca es un riguroso programa de dos años y medio que incluye preparación para la universidad, estudios en el extranjero, desarrollo de liderazgo global y compromiso cívico. Fue creado con el objetivo de ofrecer una experiencia transformadora a los estudiantes que amplíe sus mentes mientras abre las puertas a oportunidades académicas y de liderazgo únicas que pocos estudiantes tienen la oportunidad de experimentar.
