Dear staff and families,
As your new superintendent, I regret to inform you about a situation that might impact the start of school on Wednesday. As of now, we have not reached an agreement with our Paraeducators (PSE 1) union group to ratify a collective bargaining agreement for the 2024-2025 school year. We are working diligently to resolve this matter and are committed to keeping you informed every step of the way.
As you may be aware, we are negotiating a new contract with the Mount Vernon PSE 1, the union group representing our paraeducators. Our bargaining teams began meeting on April 17th, 2024 and have met on the following dates:

The District offered to meet with PSE 1 last Wednesday and throughout the week and weekend. PSE 1 was not available to meet during this time. The District also proposed an updated offer on August 22nd at 12:03 pm. At 8:00pm on August 22nd, PSE 1 notified the school district that they voted to authorize a strike beginning August 28th if we do not reach a resolution. This would mean classes would not begin on August 28th, our first day of school.
In an effort to reach a resolution, the District requested mediation services to assist in the bargaining process.
The District and PSE 1 have been in mediation since 9:30 this morning (August 26th) and the District remains available to bargain with PSE 1 until a resolution is met – regardless of how many hours it takes, as opening schools is our commitment and priority.
You may have questions about how this situation could affect our students. Below, we've provided answers to some common concerns.
FAQ
Q. If school does not start on Wednesday, August 28th, how will we make up school days that are missed due to a work stoppage?
If a strike leads to school closures, any days that are missed must be made up (similar to weather-related school closures). No matter what, we will provide our students with 180 days of quality instruction. Currently, we have 2 emergency days built into our calendar, which we can utilize to make up days missed if available.
Q. Will athletics continue or begin during a strike?
At this point, decisions will be made on August 27th regarding athletics.
Q. Can we have students attend school without paraeducators present?
While we would consider ways to facilitate school without paraeducators, currently the teacher’s union has voted in support of a strike if the paraeducators move in that direction. Teachers have informed us that they will not report to work if a strike occurs.

Como su nuevo superintendente, lamento tener que informarles sobre una situación que puede afectar el inicio de clases el miércoles. Hasta el momento, no hemos llegado a un acuerdo con nuestro grupo union de paraeducadores (PSE 1) para consolidar un acuerdo de negociación colectiva para el año escolar 2024-2025. El Distrito ofreció reunirse con PSE 1 el miércoles pasado y durante toda la semana y el fin de semana. Lamentablemente el grupo PSE 1 no estuvo disponible. El Distrito también propuso una oferta actualizada el 22 de Agosto a las 12:03 p.m. A las 8:00 p.m. del día 22 de Agosto, PSE 1 notificó al distrito escolar que votaron para autorizar una huelga a partir del 28 de Agosto si no llegamos a una resolución. Esto significaría que las clases no comenzarían el 28 de agosto, nuestro primer día de clases, hasta que lleguemos a una resolución.
En un esfuerzo por llegar a una resolución, el Distrito solicitó servicios de mediación para ayudar en el proceso de negociación.
El Distrito y PSE 1 han estado en mediación desde las 9:30 de esta mañana (26 de Agosto) y el Distrito sigue disponible para negociar con PSE hasta que se llegue a una resolución, independientemente de cuántas horas lleve, ya que abrir las escuelas es nuestro compromiso y prioridad.

Preguntas frecuentes
P. Si la escuela no comienza el miércoles 28 de Agosto, ¿cómo recuperaremos los días de escuela que se pierdan debido a un paro laboral?
R. Si una huelga cierra las escuelas, los días que se pierdan deben recuperarse (de manera similar a los cierres de escuelas relacionados con el clima). Pase lo que pase, brindaremos a nuestros estudiantes 180 días de instrucción de calidad. Actualmente, tenemos 2 días de emergencia integrados en nuestro calendario, que podemos utilizar para recuperar los días perdidos si están disponibles.
P. ¿Las actividades deportivas continuarán o comenzarán durante una huelga?
R. En este punto, el 27 de agosto se tomarán decisiones en materia atlética.
P. ¿Podemos permitir que los estudiantes asistan a la escuela sin la presencia de los paraeducadores?
R. Si bien consideraríamos formas de facilitar la escuela sin paraeducadores, actualmente el grupo unión de maestros/as ha votado a favor de una huelga si los paraeducadores avanzan en esa dirección. Los maestros/as nos han informado que no se presentarán a trabajar si se produce una huelga.
