Safety, Security, & Facilities

We Value the Safety of Our Students and Staff

Creating safe, secure, and supportive places to learn, work, and connect.

Welcome to the Mount Vernon School District Safety Security & Facilities Department. Our team works across the district to support the safety and security of our students, staff, visitors, and facilities.

Safety is a shared responsibility. We partner with school and district staff, families, local first responders, and community partners to prevent, prepare, respond, and recover, while supporting safe and welcoming learning environments throughout our district.

Emergency Preparedness Drills

Preparedness Through Practice

Mount Vernon School District conducts emergency preparedness drills throughout the school year in accordance with Washington State requirements. These drills give students and staff the opportunity to practice how to respond to a variety of emergency situations and help our schools strengthen their preparedness.

Our district uses the I Love U Guys Standard Response Protocol (SRP) as the foundation for our emergency response drills. The SRP provides a common language and clear, consistent actions for students, staff, and first responders during an emergency.

Our drills may include:

  • Hold – Stay in the classroom or designated area and continue normal activities.
  • Secure – Bring everyone inside and secure the exterior of the building.
  • Lockdown – Secure rooms, remain quiet, and follow established safety procedures.
  • Evacuate – Move to a designated location away from the building or hazard.
  • Shelter – Take appropriate protective actions based on the identified hazard.

Drills are an important part of preparedness. They help our school communities build familiarity, confidence, and shared understanding so that everyone knows what to do when it matters most.
