COVID Update
COVID is still in our community and the need to stay home when you are sick has not changed. This is true for students and staff. If you develop any of the symptoms listed below, we need you to stay home until fever-free and feeling well without medication for 24 hours. Please help us keep our schools healthy so we can finish the school year strong. 

Symptoms of COVID-19

 

• Fever (100°F or higher) or chills
• Cough
• Difficulty breathing
• Unusually tired
• Muscle or body aches
• Headache
• Recent loss of taste or smell
• Sore throat
• Stuffy or runny nose
• Nausea or vomiting
• Diarrhea (defined as 2 or more loose stools in 24 hours)

This month I sat down with Administrator, Eric Monson, and LaVenture’s Assistant Principal, Elizabeth Churape-Garcia, to hear about the upcoming summer school opportunities available for our students.  If you get a chance, take a look at the video HERE.  

All-City Band Festival
This week, the district hosted the All-City Band Festival.  The All-City Band Festival showcases the entire district band program, nearly 400 5th through 12th graders. This was the 59th festival celebrating 102 years of band in Mount Vernon. Each grade level performs one piece and everyone performs the high school fight song "On Mount Vernon'' as the big finale! Congratulations to our MVSD music team for a fantastic (under 1 hour) show! Lourdes Aguilar (Madison), Andrea Brannman (Mount Baker), Rene Godina (Centennial) Jeremiah O’Brine (Little Mountain), Omar Ordóñez (MVHS), Scott Rittenhouse (Jefferson),  Jennifer Rubio (Washington), Jacob Scherr (MVHS), and Aaron Wagner (LaVenture).  You can view the event  HERE.
 
Upcoming Events

• June 4th, at 10 AM-A special event to honor Coach Jess del Bosque where they will name the trail at Skagit Valley College and Park after him!  There will be an open mic if you’d like to attend and share a story.  Please park in the lot by McIntyre Hall and walk behind the baseball field. The Skagit Valley Herald has a nice article about this event in today’s paper. 
• June 4, 2022 @ 7pm- MVHS Mariachi and Folklorico will open for the Mexico en el Corazon event at Tacoma’s Pantages Theatre.
• June 8, 2022 @ 7pm-MVHS Graduation at Angel of the Winds Arena in Everett, WA 
• June 9, 2022 @ 6pm-Skagit Academy Graduation @ Lincoln Theatre 
• June 10, 2022 @ 6pm-Aspire Academy Graduation @ Lincoln Theatre 

Shout Outs 

• Mount Vernon High School baseball player Xavier Neyens has been named the Northwest Conference MVP.
• Mount Vernon boys' soccer player Christopher Soto has been named the Northwest Conference offensive MVP.
• Soccer players Gabriel SantaCruz, Brandon Caro and Angel Casillas made the first team, and Carlos Rosales and Aaron Diaz made the second team.
• Mount Vernon's golf player Ashley Bruland was named a first-team all-Northwest Conference girls' golf pick.
• Golfer Sara Pate made the second team.
• Olivia Collins named 2nd team for all NWC fastpitch softball.
• Student’s from Madison Elementary made “We Care” kits for people in need. These bags included daily essentials that will help individuals in their everyday lives.  The bags were donated to the Skagit Friendship House, along with a monetary donation from an otter pop fundraiser that occurred throughout the year. This is such a great example of partnering with our community for a greater cause.  Thank you Madison students, families, and staff.  A big shout out to Traci Gromus for her time and dedication, and for promoting a partnership with these local agencies.  Enjoy the picture from this week’s event, where students presented Skagit Friendship House with their donations.  
• We had an opportunity to honor this year’s retirees during our board meeting this week.  We want to thank MVEA, MESA, and PSE for contributing to and supporting this special event. Together, these employees have given the Mount Vernon students, district and community 776 years of service! To our retirees, congratulations on your retirement! A few that were received this week will be acknowledged next Friday.

Actualización de COVID

Festival de bandas de toda la ciudad
Esta semana, el distrito organizó el Festival de Bandas de Toda la Ciudad. El Festival de Bandas de Toda la Ciudad presenta todo el programa de bandas del distrito, casi 400 estudiantes de 5º a 12º grado. Este fue el festival número 59 que celebra los 102 años de la banda en Mount Vernon. ¡Cada nivel de grado interpreta una pieza y todos interpretan la canción de lucha de la escuela preparatoria "On Mount Vernon'' como gran final! ¡Felicitaciones a nuestro equipo de música de MVSD por un espectáculo fantástico (menos de 1 hora)!
