Ribbon Cutting & Centennial Celebration
This Wednesday, the district, board, and community members gathered at the Mount Vernon High School Old Main to celebrate its 100th birthday and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony.  We had an amazing turnout, with alumni representing various generations.  It was an honor to host this special celebration and to hear all the memories.  A few tears were shed as former employees and graduates walked through the halls of their past while simultaneously expressing joy and hope for our future generations of graduates.  Thank you to all those who made this such a successful event!! Bulldog Award
This month’s bulldog Award goes out to the elementary curriculum Paras who spent countless hours over the month of August so that teachers could have their new ARC materials.  Thank you to:  Holly Carter, Janis Anderson, Jim Anderson, Lucy Gonzalez, Magali Martinez, Vanessa Bañuelos-Rodriguez, Vivimarie Bañuelos-Rodriguez, Perla Silva-Cadenas, and Jenna Stollberg, for your dedication and commitment to the curriculum team and the Mount Vernon School District!!

Student Board Representatives
During last week’s board meeting, we welcomed three new student board representatives to the team.  David Pacheco, Mel Fuimaono, and Santiago Calderon III, will serve as liaisons for the board of directors and the MVHS student population. The board and superintendent are excited to have them on the team.

Board Meeting-Classroom Tours  
The board of directors participated in their first of many classroom tours this week.  They were excited to be able to do classroom visits again this year. Harriet Rowley Elementary Principal and staff were very gracious hosts as they demonstrated and highlighted the wonderful learning opportunities going on with their little orcas.

LaVenture Middle school hosts MV HOPE
On Tuesday evening, the MV HOPE anti-opioid coalition hosted a Key Leader event at LaVenture Middle School.  Thirty community leaders from a variety of sectors (business, education, government, the faith community, and health) were present to partner with MV HOPE in their vision and plan to achieve an opioid-free Skagit County.  To learn more about MV HOPE, you can contact Principal Dave Riddle at LaVenture Middle School.

Morning Tea with Dr. V
This month’s Morning Tea with Dr. V takes me to Skagit Valley College.  I had an opportunity to sit down with Dr. Villa, (another Dr. V) hearing a little more about his background and what brought him to the Skagit Valley.  As you’ll hear in the interview, Dr. Villa shares about his desire to work with the Mount Vernon School District, and how our two organizations can collaborate to encourage and provide opportunities for all students to attain higher education.  You can view our interview HERE. 

Shout Outs:

• As I mentioned earlier, the Ribbon Cutting & Centennial Celebration event was a great success, and we had many students and staff who helped make this possible.  We had video production, cheer, AVID, Band, Folklorico, Mariachi, and NCTA students join us to play music, capture the event on video, dance, give tours, direct traffic, cheer, and serve our community.  Along with students, we had many staff members who helped in the preparation and during the event.  My deep appreciation to staff at Old Main who had their classrooms and areas ready for display!  THANK YOU ALL!  This celebration was an opportunity to highlight the bond promise.  Having students and staff there and ready to support our school district community demonstrates our commitment to the bond promise and student success!
• The Mount Vernon Public Schools Foundation was an integral part of the upgrades to Old Main’s renovated auditorium.  As part of their “Declare  Your Chair” campaign, the foundation fundraised money that allowed for the purchase of upgraded auditorium seating, upgraded lighting, and an upgraded sound system.  We are extremely thankful to the Mount Vernon Public Schools Foundation’s endeavor to help improve Old Main’s auditorium.

Ceremonia de gran inauguración de MVHS “Old Main” y celebración del centenario
Este miércoles, el distrito, la junta y los miembros de la comunidad se reunieron en la escuela preparatoria de Mount Vernon, Old Main, para celebrar su centenario y la ceremonia de inauguración. Tuvimos una participación increíble, con ex alumnos que representaban a varias generaciones. Fue un honor tener esta celebración especial y escuchar todos los recuerdos. Algunas lágrimas se derramaron cuando los ex empleados y graduados caminaron por los pasillos de su pasado mientras expresaban alegría y esperanza para nuestras futuras generaciones de graduados. Premio Bulldog
El premio bulldog de este mes se presentó al grupo de estudios de primaria paraeducadores, que pasaron innumerables horas durante el mes de agosto para que los maestros pudieran tener sus nuevos materiales ARC. ¡¡ Gracias a: Holly Carter, Janis Anderson, Jim Anderson, Lucy Gonzalez, Magali Martinez, Vanessa Bañuelos-Rodriguez, Vivimarie Bañuelos-Rodriguez, Perla Silva-Cadenas y Jenna Stollberg, por su dedicación y compromiso con el equipo de currículo y del distrito escolar de  Mount Vernon!!

Representantes de la Junta escolar de Estudiantes
Durante la reunión de la junta escolar de la semana pasada, dimos la bienvenida al nuevo equipo de estudiantes representantes de la junta escolar. David Pacheco, Mel Fuimaono y Santiago Calderón III servirán como enlaces para la junta directiva y la población estudiantil de la escuela preparatoria. La junta escolar y el superintendente están emocionados de tenerlos en el equipo.
 
Visitas guiadas a reuniones de la junta directiva
La junta directiva participó en su primera de muchas visitas a los salones esta semana. Estaban emocionados de poder hacer visitas a los salones nuevamente este año. La directora y el personal de la Escuela Primaria Harriet Rowley fueron muy amables al demostrar y resaltar las maravillosas oportunidades de aprendizaje que se están dando con sus pequeñas orcas.
 
La escuela secundaria LaVenture presenta MV HOPE
El martes por la noche, la coalición anti-opiáceos MV HOPE organizó un evento de Líderes Clave en la Escuela Secundaria LaVenture. Treinta líderes comunitarios de una variedad de sectores (negocios, educación, gobierno, comunidad religiosa y salud) estuvieron presentes para asociarse con MV HOPE en su visión y plan para lograr un condado de Skagit libre de opioides. Té de la mañana con el Dr. V
El té de la mañana con el Dr. V de este mes me lleva a Skagit Valley College. Tuve la oportunidad de sentarme con el Dr. Villa (otro Dr. V) y escuchar un poco más sobre sus antecedentes y lo que lo trajo al Valle de Skagit. Como escuchará en la entrevista, el Dr. Villa comparte sobre su deseo de trabajar con el Distrito Escolar de Mount Vernon y cómo nuestras dos organizaciones pueden colaborar para alentar y brindar oportunidades para que todos los estudiantes obtengan una educación superior. • Como mencioné anteriormente, el evento de Ceremonia de gran inauguración de MVHS “Old Main” y celebración del centenario fue un gran éxito, y tuvimos muchos estudiantes y personal que ayudaron a hacer esto posible. Tuvimos producción de video, grupo de cheer, AVID, Banda, Folclórico, Mariachi y estudiantes de NCTA ayudaron con tocar música, capturar el evento en video, bailar, dar recorridos, dirigir el tráfico, animar y servir a nuestra comunidad. Junto con los estudiantes, tuvimos muchos miembros del personal que ayudaron en la preparación y durante el evento. ¡Mi profundo agradecimiento al personal de Old Main que tenía sus salones de clases y áreas listas para exhibir!  ¡GRACIAS A TODOS! Esta celebración fue una oportunidad para resaltar la promesa del bono.  

 

• La Fundación de las Escuelas Públicas de Mount Vernon fue una parte integral de las actualizaciones del auditorio renovado de Old Main. Como parte de su campaña "Declare Your Chair", la fundación recaudó dinero que permitió la compra de asientos de auditorio mejorados, iluminación mejorada y un sistema de sonido mejorado. Estamos extremadamente agradecidos con el esfuerzo de la Fundación de las Escuelas Públicas de Mount Vernon para ayudar a mejorar el auditorio de Old Main.
