Four Pillars of Support and Success
Throughout the year, the Four Pillars of Support & Success will remain a central theme, guiding us as we advance the significant work already begun. Our concerted focus on these areas will propel us toward our 100% graduation goal.

If you haven't had the opportunity yet, you can access the presentation I shared during some of your staff meetings here. This presentation outlines the four pillars, to offer greater clarity and coherence. This year, I will frequently refer to these four pillars and their alignment to our work.

Attendance Awareness Month
Student attendance is such an important part of their learning experience here in Mount Vernon (Pillar 1, Mission, Vision, and Core Values). We had an opportunity to ask our students “Why do you like coming to school?” and the responses were truly inspiring!  Don’t miss out on a chance to watch this fantastic video on why students in our schools look forward to coming to school. 

Maestros Para El Pueblo
This week we had a very productive first meeting of the year regarding the Maestros Para el Pueblo (Teachers for the Town) program (Pillar 2, Equity and Cultural Responsiveness).  The purpose of this program is to provide programmatic pathways that encourage and support bilingual and Latinx students to fulfill their goals of becoming certified educators for our K-12 school district in the Skagit Valley Community.  

We have a very strong partnership with Burlington-Edison School District (BESD), Skagit Valley College (SVC), and Western Washington University (WWU).  One of the main goals of this program is to increase the number of Latinx individuals entering the teaching field in our communities.  Our very own MVSD 2019 Washington State Teacher of the Year, Mr. Robert Hand is leading these efforts for our district in collaboration with our agency partners.  

Since its inception, we have seen this pipeline trickle out some educators who have gone through this program.  We eagerly anticipate the possibility of having a more diverse group of future educators who mirror the demographics of our student body. 

Board Meeting
This week’s board meeting took place at LaVenture Middle School, offering an excellent platform for the staff to showcase the positive developments happening at LaVenture. Additionally, the board received an update on the ongoing construction and progress.  They had a chance to walk through and see the facility's improvements. This was a great opportunity to review Pillar 4 (Operations and Management), and how the district is working strategically to steward our funding as we improve our facilities.  

Safety and Security
As an integral component of the Four Pillars of Support and Success, specifically Pillar 4, we are committed to improving and building upon our Safety & Security procedures. The importance of these efforts within our district cannot be overstated, as they play a pivotal role in safeguarding the well-being of both our students and staff. Our team remains dedicated to expanding upon the essential groundwork that has been previously laid.  As we move forward with this work, we will engage with building principals and directors to refine our processes and ensure that our schools and buildings are safe for all.  

SFBC (Student Focused Balance Calendar)
As part of our Pillar 3 work (Meaningful Engagement of Families and Community), we continue our SFBC work. Next month our team will be working with students to gather their input regarding our balanced calendar work. Our balanced calendar stakeholder group will help us review the feedback. We will then reach back out to the community and our staff for additional feedback later this fall. 

Here is a voluntary opportunity about this Balanced Calendar Initiative.  State association partners are excited to announce a series of virtual professional learning and networking opportunities for the 2023/24 school year, starting with a virtual Fall Summit on October 11 from 4:00-6:00 pm!
 
District and building teams are invited to join the Fall Summit to explore a wide variety of topics with school leaders and national experts and network with colleagues from across the state. Here is a link to the agenda. As a team, you’ll be able to “divide and conquer” by branching out to the different breakout sessions. Here’s a link to register.

Student Board Representatives
In this week's board meeting, three of our high school students took their oath of office, pledging their time and effort to represent the voice of the Mount Vernon School District's student body. These students will actively participate in our monthly board meetings and collaborate with board member Griffin Uchida and Equity & Inclusion Director, David Rodriguez, throughout the year. We want to thank Melanie Fuimaono, Parker Halgren, and Carlos Barajas for their dedicated service to their fellow classmates.  As a reminder, you can access the district's “School Board” page on our website here.  You can access upcoming board meeting dates, minutes, and other important information.  Welcome Student Board Reps!

• As a way to highlight Hispanic Heritage Month, MVHS students put together a great video highlighting one of our Alumni, Ms. Padilla.  You can watch that video here.  
• This week’s Hispanic Heritage Ceremony at the MVHS was a great success.  Diverse leaders from around the county came together to celebrate and express their reflections.  Thank you ASB,  MV Mariachi, LIA team, and students for putting together this remarkable event.  ASB President, Mel Fuimaono, gave a wonderful speech during this event!  If you’d like to see photos from these events, you can click here to read more about it.  LIA students finished off the day by reading the Hispanic Heritage Proclamation during the board meeting.  Thank you Lucia Rodriguez (LIA), Brianna Aguirre (LIA), Verenice Ochoa (MV Mariachi), and Ashley Zuniga (MV Mariachi).
• This week, LaVenture & Mount Baker hosted their Open House events. This was a great opportunity for families to drop in and connect with staff.  Thank you LaVenture and Mount Baker staff for your help in getting things set up for our families and students!
• Congratulations to the MVHS Varsity Volleyball team for their win over Sedro-Woolley HS last week!  Way to go team!

Cuatro pilares de apoyo y éxito
A lo largo del año, los Cuatro Pilares de Apoyo y Éxito seguirán siendo un tema central, guiándonos a medida que avanzamos en el importante trabajo que ya hemos comenzado. Nuestro enfoque concertado en estas áreas nos impulsará hacia nuestra meta de graduación del 100%.

Si aún no ha tenido la oportunidad, puede acceder a la presentación que compartí durante algunas de sus reuniones de personal aquí. Esta presentación describe los cuatro pilares, para ofrecer mayor claridad y coherencia. Este año me referiré con frecuencia a estos cuatro pilares y su alineación con nuestro trabajo.

Mes de concientización sobre la asistencia
La asistencia de los estudiantes es una parte muy importante de su experiencia de aprendizaje aquí en Mount Vernon (Pilar 1, Misión, Visión y Valores Fundamentales). Tuvimos la oportunidad de preguntarles a nuestros estudiantes "¿Por qué te gusta venir a la escuela?" ¡Y las respuestas fueron realmente inspiradoras! No pierda la oportunidad de ver este fantástico video sobre por qué los estudiantes de nuestras escuelas esperan venir a la escuela.

Maestros Para El Pueblo
Esta semana tuvimos una primera reunión del año muy productiva sobre el programa Maestros Para el Pueblo (Pilar 2, Equidad y Sensibilidad Cultural). El propósito de este programa es proporcionar vías programáticas que alienten y apoyen a los estudiantes bilingües y latinos a cumplir sus objetivos de convertirse en educadores certificados para nuestro distrito escolar K-12 en la comunidad de Skagit Valley.

Tenemos una asociación muy sólida con el Distrito Escolar Burlington-Edison (BESD), Skagit Valley College (SVC) y Western Washington University (WWU). Uno de los principales objetivos de este programa es aumentar el número de personas latinas que ingresan al campo de la enseñanza en nuestras comunidades. Nuestro propio Maestro del Año del Estado de Washington 2019 de MVSD, el Sr. Robert Hand, está liderando estos esfuerzos para nuestro distrito en colaboración con nuestras agencias asociadas.

Desde su inicio, hemos visto este canal filtrar a algunos educadores que han pasado por este programa. Anticipamos con entusiasmo la posibilidad de tener un grupo más diverso de futuros educadores que reflejen la demografía de nuestro alumnado.

Reunión de la junta directiva
La reunión de la junta directiva de esta semana tuvo lugar en LaVenture Middle School, ofreciendo una excelente plataforma para que el personal muestre los avances positivos que están sucediendo en LaVenture. Además, la junta recibió una actualización sobre la construcción y el progreso en curso. Tuvieron la oportunidad de caminar y ver las mejoras de las instalaciones. Esta fue una gran oportunidad para revisar el Pilar 4 (Operaciones y Gestión) y cómo el distrito está trabajando estratégicamente para administrar nuestros fondos a medida que mejoramos nuestras instalaciones.

Seguridad y proteccion
Como componente integral de los Cuatro Pilares de Apoyo y Éxito, específicamente el Pilar 4, estamos comprometidos a mejorar y desarrollar nuestros procedimientos de Seguridad y Protección. No se puede subestimar la importancia de estos esfuerzos dentro de nuestro distrito, ya que juegan un papel fundamental en salvaguardar el bienestar tanto de nuestros estudiantes como del personal. Nuestro equipo sigue dedicado a ampliar el trabajo preliminar esencial que se ha establecido anteriormente. A medida que avancemos con este trabajo, colaboraremos con los directores de los edificios para perfeccionar nuestros procesos y garantizar que nuestras escuelas y edificios sean seguros para todos.

SFBC (Calendario equilibrado centrado en el estudiante)
Como parte de nuestro trabajo del Pilar 3 (Participación significativa de las familias y la comunidad), continuamos nuestro trabajo SFBC. El próximo mes nuestro equipo trabajará con los estudiantes para recopilar sus opiniones sobre nuestro trabajo de calendario equilibrado. Nuestro grupo de partes interesadas del calendario equilibrado nos ayudará a revisar los comentarios. Luego nos comunicaremos con la comunidad y con nuestro personal para obtener comentarios adicionales más adelante este otoño.

Aquí hay una oportunidad voluntaria sobre esta Iniciativa de Calendario Equilibrado. Los socios de las asociaciones estatales se complacen en anunciar una serie de oportunidades de establecimiento de contactos y aprendizaje profesional virtual para el año escolar 2023/24, comenzando con una Cumbre de Otoño virtual el 11 de octubre de 4:00 a 6:00 p. m.
 
Se invita a los equipos del distrito y de la construcción a unirse a la Cumbre de Otoño para explorar una amplia variedad de temas con líderes escolares y expertos nacionales y establecer contactos con colegas de todo el estado. Aquí esta el enlace al orden del día. Como equipo, podrán “dividir y conquistar” al ampliar las diferentes sesiones de trabajo. Aquí hay un enlace para registrarse.

Representantes de la junta estudiantil
En la reunión de la junta directiva de esta semana, tres de nuestros estudiantes de secundaria prestaron juramento y prometieron su tiempo y esfuerzo para representar la voz del cuerpo estudiantil del Distrito Escolar de Mount Vernon. Estos estudiantes participarán activamente en nuestras reuniones mensuales de la junta y colaborarán con el miembro de la junta Griffin Uchida y el director de Equidad e Inclusión, David Rodríguez, durante todo el año. Queremos agradecer a Melanie Fuimaono, Parker Halgren y Carlos Barajas por su dedicado servicio a sus compañeros de clase. • Como una manera de resaltar el Mes de la Herencia Hispana, los estudiantes de MVHS crearon un excelente video destacando a una de nuestras exalumnas, la Sra. Padilla. Puedes ver ese vídeo aquí.
• La Ceremonia de la Herencia Hispana de esta semana en MVHS fue un gran éxito. Diversos líderes de todo el condado se reunieron para celebrar y expresar sus reflexiones. Gracias ASB, MV Mariachi, equipo de LIA y estudiantes por organizar este extraordinario evento. ¡El presidente de ASB, Mel Fuimaono, pronunció un maravilloso discurso durante este evento! Los estudiantes de LIA terminaron el día leyendo la Proclamación de la Herencia Hispana durante la reunión de la junta directiva. • Esta semana, LaVenture y Mount Baker organizaron sus eventos de puertas abiertas. Esta fue una gran oportunidad para que las familias vinieran y se conectaran con el personal. ¡Gracias al personal de LaVenture y Mount Baker por su ayuda para preparar las cosas para nuestras familias y estudiantes!
• ¡Felicitaciones al equipo de voleibol universitario de MVHS por su victoria sobre Sedro-Woolley HS la semana pasada! ¡Así se hace equipo!
