Student & Family Support
Sometimes families face challenges that make school harder — housing instability, foster placement, a student who is struggling academically, or just needing a quieter place to do homework. Mount Vernon's student and family support work is built around a simple principle: every student belongs here, and we work to remove what gets in the way of learning.
This section covers our federally protected support programs (McKinney-Vento for students experiencing homelessness, foster care liaison services), our multi-tiered academic and behavioral framework (MTSS), and our after-school support center for students who want extra help with their work.
When families need extra help
- McKinney-Vento Homeless Education — federal protections, enrollment without paperwork, school-of-origin rights, transportation, and a curated community-resource directory. District Liaison: Brad Edwards.
- Foster Care Support — school-of-origin protections, coordination with DCYF caseworkers, the School Notification Form, and OSPI-linked resources. District Liaison: Manny Espinoza.
Academic and behavioral support
- MTSS — Multi-Tiered System of Support — our three-tier framework for catching and supporting students who need more than universal Tier 1 instruction.
- Student Support Center — the Kulshan Blue House behind LaVenture, open Monday-Thursday afternoons for free after-school tutoring and homework help.
